Chandos Anthem No. 7
George Frideric Handel composed a series of anthems, known familiarly as the Chandos Anthems, while serving as composer-in-residence at Cannons, the court of James Brydges, who became the First Duke of Chandos in 1719.
The anthems were composed for use in Anglican church services held at St. Lawrence in Whitchurch, while Brydges built a private chapel at his estate. The scoring for solo voices, chorus, oboe, strings, and continuo is intimate, in keeping with the limited space and the musicians available at the parish church.
Like many composers of his day, Handel often used previously composed music as starting points for new works. “My song shall be alway” is partly derived from his “Te Deum in D” (HWV 280). The text is based on Psalm 89.

ABOUT “TUNING IN”
“Tuning In”(formerly “The Bach Experience”) explores the music of the Baroque era, especially the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. Free to all, Tuning In combines an informal talk with a performance to help both newcomers and experienced listeners better understand the context of a particular work, as well as the musical and lyrical devices a composer uses to realize their vision.
