St. Matthew Passion

Bach Akademie Charlotte launches its 2020-2021 season virtually, with an in-depth look at the St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244. This series features six videos, with extended insight from Artistic Director Scott Allen Jarrett and selections from our performance at the 2019 Charlotte Bach Festival.

Part 1: The debt we owe

Movements 2-6, including the aria, Buss und Reu (Woe and rue)

Part 2: Mourn your sins

Movements 26-29, including the chorale, O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß (O mankind, mourn your great sins)

Part 3: For all with ears to hear

Movements 38-40, including the aria, Erbame dich (Have mercy, Lord)

Part 4: Freed into love, so that we can love

Movements 45-50, including the aria, Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben (Out of love my Savior wants to die).

Part 5: Create in me a clean heart

Movements 61-65, including the aria, Mache diche, mein Herze rein (Make Thee clean, my heart)

Part 6: The triumph of the cross

Movements 1, 67-68, the opening and closing choruses
