Festival Opening Celebration Asheville

BACH: Magnificat
BACH: B minor Orchestral Suite No. 2
BACH: Herr Gott, Dich Loben Alle Wir, BWV 130

Friday, June 7th - 7:30 pm

The Cathedral of All Souls, Asheville, NC

The festival kicks off with a program of three richly varied works. Our fabulous cantata choir and our instrumental partners, the North Carolina Baroque Orchestra, will open the concert with cantata Herr Gott, Dich Loben Alle Wir, BWV 130, written for the Feast of St. Michael on September 29, 1724.

The NCBO will take center stage in the classic Orchestral Suite No. 2, featuring the silvery sonorities of the flute and containing some of the catchiest melodies Bach ever composed.

Finally, the choir and orchestra will join forces again for Bach’s sunny musical setting of the biblical  Magnificat, which is sure to delight both new and seasoned lovers of Bach. The Magnificat (Latin for "[My soul] magnifies [the Lord]") is a canticle, also known as the Song of Mary.  It is the first major liturgical composition on a Latin text by Bach. The text of the canticle is taken directly from the Gospel of Luke (1:46–55). In the narrative, after Mary greets Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist, the latter moves within Elizabeth's womb. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith, and Mary responds with what is now known as the Magnificat.

Featuring the BA|Charlotte Cantata Choir and NCBO under the direction of Scott Allen Jarrett.
