Avi Stein to help kick off CBF26

Avi Stein headshotBach Charlotte is thrilled to have the renowned Avi Stein both perform an organ recital and lead the Bach Charlotte Chorus and Orchestra at Charlotte Bach Festival ’26. Based in New York City, Avi is the associate organist and chorusmaster at Trinity Church Wall Street. He teaches continuo accompaniment, vocal repertoire, and chamber music at Juilliard. And he has served as Artistic Director of The Helicon Foundation since 2013. 

The New York Times described Avi as "a brilliant organ soloist" in his Carnegie Hall debut. In addition to performing, Avi has directed the International Baroque Academy of Musiktheater Bavaria, and the young artists’ program at the Carmel Bach Festival. He has conducted a variety of ensembles including Tafelmusik, the Portland Baroque Orchestra, the Bang on a Can All-Stars, and the Opera Français de New York.

On Saturday, May 30, Avi will lead the Bach Charlotte Chorus and Orchestra in Gloria! Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi at the Sandra Levine Theatre on the campus of Queens University of Charlotte. On Sunday afternoon, he will perform an all-Bach Organ Recital at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in uptown. And then on Monday, he will lead a Masterclass for local organ students. The masterclass is free and open to the public.

At Juilliard, Avi conducted Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas in a production that toured to London’s Holland Park and the Royal Opera House at the Palace of Versailles, as well as a production of Luigi Rossi’s Orfeo, which was named one of the best performances of the year by The New York Times. He also performed on the Boston Early Music Festival’s recording of Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers and La Couronne de Fleurs, which won the 2015 Grammy® for best opera recording. Stein studied at Indiana University, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Southern California, and was a Fulbright scholar in Toulouse, France.
