Maryse Legault

Clarinetist Maryse Legault, praised by The Wall Street Journal for her “transcendent playing,” specializes in historical performance on period instruments, moving fluently across centuries of repertoire. One of the only Canadians specializing in historical clarinets, and the first Quebecer to graduate in the field,

Maryse earned her master’s degree in historical clarinet performance from the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag in 2017, studying with Eric Hoeprich. She’s known for fearless programming choices and interpretations that balance technical precision with expressive risk-taking.

Maryese holds a PhD in musicology from McGill University, where her research examined the interaction between performance and philosophy in the 19th century. Her work has been presented at the University of Oxford, the Conservatoire national supérieur in Paris, and the Hochschule der Künste Bern.

Performing regularly with the Handel and Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Teatro Nuovo, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and Arion Orchestre Baroque, Maryse has also collaborated with European ensembles including MusicAeterna and Les Siècles. In 2023, she was named an Emerging Artist by Early Music America. Her debut solo album, Around Baermann (Leaf Music, 2023), received critical acclaim. She is a recipient of the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award and a SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Doctoral Fellowship.
