Johann Sebastian BACH Ascension Oratorio (“Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen”), BWV 11
The 2022 Charlotte Bach Festival concludes with two of Bach’s most resplendent and festive works — the Easter and Ascension Oratorios. The Bach Akademie Orchestra expands to its fullest number, including baroque trumpets and timpani.
Just as Handel’s Dixit Dominus lit the spark for the festival’s opening, his brilliant Zadok the Priest (performed at every English coronation since 1727!) crowns our final performances alongside Bach’s masterpieces. Bach Akademie of Charlotte is thrilled to partner with First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, and Queens University, in their magnificently renovated Levine Theatre, for these final performances.
From the Exaltation of the cross discovered in the St John Passion (Bach Experiences I-III), to the Glory of the Easter Oratorio’s empty tomb and the Ascension Oratorio’s Majesty of the celestial throne, Bach’s music rejoices in Love’s triumph. And, as way leads unto way, so too our promise of renewal: raised like him, like him we rise – ours the cross, the grave, the skies.
