Bach Cantatas for Solo Voices features solo cantatas that contemplates life, death, and the soul’s longing for peace—all expressed with extraordinary beauty and emotional honesty. This concert features a lineup of artists who bring these works to life with insight and imagination. Bass Edmund Milly lends his resonant voice and exceptional musical sensitivity to Ich habe genug, BWV 82, a cantata that rests in the stillness of a soul ready for release. It includes the beloved aria, "Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen,"—a lullaby for the weary spirit that’s as comforting as it is profound.
In Vergnügte Ruh, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV 170, countertenor Nicholas Garza takes us on a journey from serenity to anguish and back again, with music that wrestles with worldly temptation and ultimately turns toward divine peace. Nick brings both warmth and clarity to this stunning work, and hearing it in his voice is something truly special.
Also on the program is Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe, BWV 1060R—a vibrant, joyful piece that pairs two of the most expressive instruments in dialogue. Our Artistic Leader, Aisslinn Nosky, whose electrifying presence and natural leadership light up any stage, will be featured alongside oboist Kristin Olson, whose playing is full of elegance, color, and soul. Kristin also plays obbligato lines in both cantatas, making her a central voice throughout the concert.
This is music that doesn’t just sound beautiful—it means something.
