Johann Sebastian Bach worked within the junction of the two most powerful musical tastemakers in the 18th century, the French and the Italians. Our sojourn to Italy begins with solo and orchestral music by Vivaldi, whose music formed the foundation of Bach’s own concerto writing. We move to a composer who you know even if you don’t think you do, Luigi Boccherini, whose chamber music and virtuoso writing suited to his own remarkable cello playing takes us from Bach’s era to the next.

Guy Fishman is principal cellist of Boston’s Handel and Haydn Society, and is heard as a soloist, recitalist, chamber, and orchestral musician on period and standard cello. A Fulbright Fellow, Guy has performed as principal cellist with such ensembles as Seraphic Fire, Boston Baroque, and Apollo’s Fire. He serves on the faculty at New England Conservatory and is a Bach Charlotte Artistic Leader.
